There are only a handful of campgrounds in the relatively developed region around St. Petersburg, including Fort de Soto Park (county run), which boasts one of the nation's top-ranked beaches. As any experienced camper from these parts will warn you, it's wise to come equipped with a portable fan during summer months (most camp sites have power hook-ups) as it doesn't cool down much in the evenings here and after the breeze dies down, even a ventilated tent can stay uncomfortably warm (aka beastly hot).
