Henry Flagler, a wealthy investor, had Whitehall, a 55-room estate, built as a winter retreat for his wife in 1902. Since returning to family in 1959 after an earlier stint as a hotel, the mansion has been lovingly returned to its early state and opened to the public as a museum. The real jaw-dropper here, aside from the grand scale of it all, is the lavish decor, from extravagent period furnishings (saved from the height of the Gilded Age) to elegant color schemes - it might put home renovation in a different light.
