Lake Okeechobee is the second largest freshwater lake in the United States (not counting lakes partially in another country). Only Lake Michigan is larger. The state of Rhode Island could almost fit into Okeechobee. Its mass is difficult to comprehend and at 6,000 years old, it predates many civilizations. Truly, if any lake could serve as headwaters of the Everglades, it would have to be this massive, if shallow, natural lake.

The wide shores of the lake serve as a stop along the Florida Trail, although you'll want to stick to the paved portion. The lake is very rich in wildlife - the American Alligator is especially common. So are birds, from wading species like the Snowy Egret to birds of prey like the Osprey and the rare Everglades Snail Kite.

Fishermen will find plenty of bluegill, crappie and largemouth bass in the lake, and occasionally pickerel.
