Description

The City of Inverness, incorporated in 1919, encompasses 7 square miles of hilly terrain and is bordered on the East by the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes. While few would consider Inverness metropolitan, the downtown is distinguished by buildings of character, stature, and significance to the residents of Citrus County. The most prominent, the 1912 Historic Court House, now stands center stage as a focal point in the re-invigorated downtown. Visitors who walk the halls, climb its steps, or experience the view of the courtroom cannot help but feel the weight of history and pride that is so evident in the rich wood and majestic granite that make this building special. A museum depicting the history of Citrus County may be enjoyed on the first floor of the building. The building has been restored to its original beauty after reviewing materials from the county archives and scenes from the 1961 Elvis Presley movie, "Follow that Dream". (Major scenes were filmed in the old courthouse).Still of grandeur heritage is the Crown Hotel. Originally constructed in 1880, and later moved to its current location on Seminole Avenue, this splendid building remains as one of several landmark structures in Inverness.Driving along west central Florida one suddenly enters a beautiful community of lakes and trees and peacefulness that is a strong reminder of days gone by. Combined with today's modern buildings and facilities, Inverness will definitely leave an impression on the soul.Inverness has developed and prospered through its stable governing body while still maintaining a strong "cultural mindset". From the evidentiary streetscaping, traffic roundabouts, newly renovated Withlacoochee N. Apopka Trailhead (at 46 miles currently the longest paved trail in Florida), to the monumental 290 acre Whispering Pines Park, Inverness is all about blending the community into its environment. The town that phosphate and turpentine built survives on character, planning, teamwork and its natural beauty. New local residents and visitors have commented about the uniqueness of Inverness with its tree-lined southern lakes with a northern feel. They may not have been looking for Inverness when they drove through the community, but the community may have been patiently waiting for them.
Inverness enjoys a plethora of events and activities to include Eleven Signature Events and Festivals as well as a robust Farmer's Market each Saturday. Check our website www.inverness-fl.gov
